Ralph Bunche
Center Volunteers
Volunteers are a huge part
of our program. We encourage all of our parents to
volunteer as much as they like. Take a moment to read
more about what a Ralph Bunche volunteer is...
Who can volunteer?
Both parents and community members can volunteer! Our school
receives a budget that provides actual funding for staff
salaries, food, materials and supplies, etc.. Another part
of the budget requires us to document how much volunteer
time we use throughout the year. We then are able to
calculate a dollar figure for the number of volunteer hours
you have helped us with, and thus, we meet our budget and
program guidelines.
Why Should You Volunteer?
Over the years, VOLUNTEERS have been an important part of
the program. High school and college students, housewives,
PARENTS of Head Start/Pre-K children, retired senior
citizens… all kinds of people have offered their much need
help to local programs. VOLUNTEERS assist with indoor
creative play, in games with children and in telling or
reading stories, supervise outdoor play, visits to the
community (field trips), assist in parent education, help
renovate and/or decorate the school, recruit and instruct
other volunteers.
This process of documenting volunteer time is called “IN
KIND” services. Your child’s teacher and your family partner
will tell you more about this process. Please remember that
we depend on YOU to help us meet this program requirement!
What you can do as a volunteer?
We will use you to help where you are comfortable, whether
it be in a classroom, lunchroom, driving a parent to a
health appointment, etc.
You can learn many simple teaching strategies that will help
you work better with your child at home.
You will sign your child in and out daily on our “IN KIND”
form. Also, we provide monthly Home Learning activities for
you and your child.
You can volunteer to help as it fits your schedule. Many
parents help out before or after school if they can’t come
between 8:00AM-2:30PM.
We need your help! Whatever time you can give us, whether it
be several days a week or once a month, WE NEED YOU.
How do volunteers help?
1. Give assistance to a child when needed.
2. Listen and respond to a child’s questions in a positive
open manner.
3. State limits in positive terms.
4. Give honest reasons for limits and honest answers to
children’s questions.
5. Show respect and concern in dealing with the children.
6. Speak to a child on a face-to-face level.
7. Encourage the child’s creativity by avoiding any
modeling.
8. Locate equipment, supplies and know the routines of the
classroom.
9. Give choices to the child only when the child’s decision
can be accepted.
